Description
This is a complete set of dress uniform accessories that belonged toU.S. Navy LCDR John R. Craig
.
Craig captained the
USS Grampus
, which conducted successful patrols in the Pacific theater of World War II before she was lost at sea in March, 1943 with all hands aboard - believed to have been sunk by a Japanese depth charge attack.
Craig was memorialized with the launch of the
USS John R. Craig
, a destroyer commissioned in the last year of the war.
This kit, purchased from the U.S. Naval Academy's Midshipman's Store, was in the effects returned to his widow after he went down with his ship and crew. It includes full-dress shoulder boards, a bacon hat with ornate brocade, and a sword belt, all in good condition.
The gold work bears some slight tarnish, and the case shows normal wear and tear for something of its age, but is in solid working condition.
